hi Ken and Marcia, I have visited your site a number of times and am blown away by what you have done since 'retiring'. Last night I listened to your podcast interview with Trailcast whilst out on my evening walk along the coast. it was great! it's such a diferent experience hearing someone talk about what they have done rather than just reading it. really liked the bit about how you engineered lifts into and out of towns, the quicksand story and sense of place when you talked about Nevada.
cheers, Paul

I was at your presentation last night in Hailey. After reviewing your equipment list I have a few question. What did you use for personal hygeine as you said you did not use water. Also, what about toilet paper. I thorougly enjoyed your talk. Karen Fisher

I am jealous of the two of you. The experiences and visuals you must have taken away from your journies must be difficult to put into words. To witness what the two of you have witnessed and to have seen that much of this wonderful country must be incredible. You are both very lucky to have found someone with this similar interest to be able to encourage one another through all of the difficulties these treks must have presented. Congratulations!

Sorry I missed you on your trip through. We would have tried to offer some help along the way. We actually just discovered there was an ADT, although we have been members of the North Bend Rail Trail for ages. This year we have hosted Robin & Patty, Randy & Shari, and Jakob and Tamar, each for 2 nights and have enjoyed it a lot. I went back to your journal and saw you in a photo with the mother of one of my students. I pulled the site up for her to see. Good luck. Sharon

I heard about you on the trailcast podcast and was fascinated and inspired by your accomplishments. I actually do not hike but have walked in every direction around my suburban home for 60 min a day, every day (4 miles) since May 2005 in order to lose weight, and reduce my blood pressure and cholesterol (all accomplished). I don't let any kind of weather stop me, heat or freezing cold, but I realize it's only an hour at a time. I am enamored with the idea of hiking. My only reluctance is no indoor plumbing! How do you think I should start? I am 53.

I first heard of your long distance hikes in the national news when you finished your recent ADT hike in October. I have since read your trail journals for the ADT and the AT. I am now starting on the CDT journal. I really enjoy your adventures, but even more than that your bright spirit of adventure and discovery. I would like to someday hike the long distance trails. I am currently working on section hiking the Idaho Centennial Trail which is about 1,000 miles from Nevada to the Canadian border.

Wow, what an exciting adventure you both have had. I saw Marcia at the store after one of your previous hikes and really admired what you had done that time. This is simply amazing. I don't know if Marcia remembers me but our kids are close to the same age. Bob sings with the symphony and my daughter is Heather and son is Troy. I can't remember which one was in school with which of your boys. My memory is just not what it used to be. You must have some wonderful stories of your adventures. Dear Ken and Marcia: It was a pleasure meeting you Sunday, May 8th on the River-to-River trail in the Shawnee National Forest. Sorry you heard us the night before during our "competitive charades" game! We had no idea there was anyone else within miles of our camp. If we had known you were so close, we would've invited you to join us. The students, along with Don Pankuch and myself, were very impressed with your plan to hike from coast to coast. Having already completed the other three North/South trails, we're sure you've got the heart and soul to finish this trip. Good for you! You provided an excellent example to the students that life isn't all about graduating, getting a job, working your whole adult life, then retiring and sitting around. There's a whole lot out there just waiting for you to discover it. As part of the Adventure Studies program at Waubonsie Valley High School in Aurora, Illinois we introduce the students to a little bit of the outdoors. Sort of give them a taste of what's out there. We try a high ropes course, indoor climbing, outdoor rock climbing, caving, hiking, camping, and backpacking. All designed not only to let the students experience each activity, but also to build confidence, maturity, and decision making that they will carry with them long after the class is over. A couple of years ago, a student named Ben Gross created a website as his final project for Adventure Studies. To learn more about what we do and where we've been, you can go to http://www.3dfamilytree.com/adventurestudies/ and take a look. Good luck with the rest of your hike. You are truly an inspiration to those of us who love the outdoors! Sincerely, Al Pioch

Dear Ken and Marcia. Found your journels by poking around some on the internet.. I recently finished "Hiking the triple crown" by Karen Berger.. loved it. I'm a big hiker here in Santa Barbara and have been a hike leader for our local Sierra Club for many years. Many of us want to but can't, dream about it but can't for many reason's.. and I sure do admire your skills in planning the thru walk of the ADT.. I'm enjoying so much reading the journel as you progress westward. Keep your chin's up, and your powder dry ! You inspire me.. besides, you gotta walk... Stay safe, Patrick J. Delesha

Ken and Marcia, I'm glad you are off to such a great start on the ADT. It looks like you did an excellent job with the planning. I'll be tracking your progress and plan to include some updates on you in the next ADT newsletter (summer 2005). If you have any jpg photos of your trip you would let me use, could you send them to me or let me know if I can download them from somewhere? I'm sure you will love your ADT experience as much as we did. Happy Hiking!

Ken & Marcia, Tell me about your Bibler Lighthouse tent. I am curious if the epic by Nextec fabric holds rain water or condensation ,Like polyurethane coated fabric. In other words does it sprong up water like a regular tent, or does it repel water like sil-nylon also if the lighthouse was stored wet would it stick together like polyurethane coated fabrics. Thank You Henry ( wish I was out there)Happy Hiking

Thanks so much for sharing your experience on this website! My husband and I have hiked the JMT twice (most recently with our 1 year old baby), but for now, longer hikes will have to wait. In the meantime, it is very encouraging to read about your adventures and dream about what our own retirement might be like! Good luck on the ADT! Weed, CA USA - Thursday, December 30, 2004 at 10:41:14 (PST) Sad news there. Our camera developed a problem early in the hike. We have a few print pictures that I'll try to locate and post.

A man who claims to be only one of two to have completed the triple crown trails twice is asleep in my backyard. He was hitchhiking today out of El Paso, after having finished yet another leg on the CDT. Is there a way to know more about Bill Nedderman? I don't have any reason to believe that he hasn't done it, and would like to know if anyone has taken the time and the trouble of compiling and maintaining a list of people that have completed this feat (along with you two) and other trivia etc. CT

Greetings Ken and Marcia, Thoroughly enjoyed reading about your CDT thru hike. I thru hiked the AT in 2000, and the PCT in 2002. Looking forward to a thru hike of the CDT in 2005 or 06. Any suggestions or advice in addition to what I gleaned from your journal would greatly appreciated. Want to do a NOBO like the other two trails. Seems doable and Amtrak back to Ohio would be very convenient. You didn't mention any serious snow fields in Glacier. Was it a problem. Did either of you carry an ice axe or crampons? Frogg Toggs and a Poncho or just the poncho in place of a rain suit? I haven't used FTs yet, but did go for a poncho in Wash State. Had some trouble with blowing rain while hiking but did like being able to use it as a temp tent while seated for lunch or snacks. Would like to know your thoughts about GPS units. Brand you used and reliability. Could you have done the trail without it. Hope to speak with you over the winter if possible. Look forward to your comments' Kindest regards...hike safe, Dave

Ken, I have read with fascination the newspaper articles of you and Marcia hiking the famous trails. I have a question: when you went through Glacier Park in Montana, how close did you follow the divide? I am very familiar with Glacier and have hiked along the divide in several places that are off trail. I am curious and would very much like to share experiences sometime when the two of you are not "on the trail". Greg

This email was returned from kdpo@pacbell.net, so I'm hoping you'll see it here and respond. All the best. (4/22/04) I was present at the highly informative and very entertaining presentation you gave to the Venturing roundtable in Dublin on March 18. When I recounted the evening's fun to my Crew's Adult Leadership meeting the other night they were most interested. They suggested that we enquire as to whether you could do a similar presentation for our Crew. I agreed to see what might be possible for you. We meet twice a month, the first and third Thursdays, but could easily be flexible to accommodate your needs. I appreciate your time and look forward to hearing from you. Angela Volz

I was at your presentation at REI Concord this evening (02/24/04). Thanks for sharing that, it was really interesting to get a view of those 3 major trails. I've done quite a few short trips (3-7 days) and have plans for a 14 day trip thru New Mexico this summer. But your accomplishments are quite an amazing inspiration, and I hope one day to be able to claim at least 3 of your journeys (John Muir, PCT, Tahoe Rim). However your talk about the CDT came close to convincing me that that one would be an amazing journey.

Absolutely love your webpage, particular the section on equipment; still have more to read. Questions:
1. Why did you take a windbreaker in addition to a
rain jacket?
2. How did you like the ZRest?
3. Did you have to carry an extra stove cannister?
4. How long did the New Balance's last?
5. I noticed a lot of people use the Capilene shirts. Why are they so good?

K&M....Saw the article in the paper! Last I talked to you was when you were just thinking about the CDT. I was looking for some mentoring for my hike on the PCT in 2001, and thanks for your assistance. I completed my planned 550 miles, had a glorious time. Thinking about the CDT, but New Mexico sounds forboding! Looks like you have lightweight hiking down to a gnats ass (estimated weight, .000001 g). Mind the ounces and the pounds mind themselves. Hello Ken & Marcia,
I was just going through all of the details of your site and trip. Fantastic!
The Troop 911 scouts went on their 1st 50 mile training hike this past weekend (5/18/02). 9 scouts, 4 adults. The boys did great. 8.5 miles around Chabot lake (Back of Castro Valley). I was the slowest. I have 3 months to get in shape for the 50.
We often talk about your venture at the troop meetings. You guys are THE example of ultra-light camping.
All my best to you both. May your feet feel the bliss of a cool mountain breeze.

I met you @ Bellachs awhile back. When you told me about this adventure, I made up my mind to do the California AIDSRIDE from SF to LA. Your journey must have been such a wonderful feeling, especially at the end. Beautiful pictures! One of my fondest memories as a teenager was going camping with my older cousin near Paradise, CA. We camped in the middle of a great meadow and I woke up the next morning to crystal blue skies with the smell of frying bacon intermingled w/ the scent of pine on that cold spring morning. You two must have had many, many mornings like that. Thanks for sharing this site of your adventure.
