East Bay Regional Parks District is our local parks district. They have many trails along the east coast of San Francisco Bay and in the hills eastward. The trails vary greatly in length and in steepness.

Trails Challenge

East Bay Regional Parks District publishes a guidebook each spring containing 20 local hiking trails. The program is called Trails Challenge. The challenge is two-fold: The first is to hike 26 miles during the month of May; the second is to hike 5 of the Challenge Hikes during the year. We thought this sounded like an interesting way to keep up our hiking. Marcia got the 2004 book and we started hiking that night. Our personal challenge is to hike all 20 hikes during the month of May. We learned so much about the East Bay and its history that we found an earlier challenge book with more interesting hikes.  We will try to keep up with the yearly challenge hikes.
