5/9, Day 13, 22 grueling miles
Continued hiking thru the canyon of the Middle Fork of the Gila. Same as the day before – many more stream crossings. Saw a small herd of elk. They were in a canyon with no way out except going a couple of miles upstream. Saw bear prints on the trail 2 or 3 times during the day.
Late in the day the canyon widened, the river got smaller. We rock hopped the last few stream crossings.
We hiked until 8:30 that night to get to Snow Lake at the top of the Gila River. Saw our first humans that day at the campground. Campground had picnic tables, pit toilets, and water spigots.
Coyotes howled during the middle of the night. Our campsite was exposed and cold.
