What a welcome to
Washington. This clear cut is worse than the one in California. And they route
us right through it. It seemed a lot longer than 1/4 mile, too.
Mount Adams - the
next in the chain of volcanoes.
Checking out the
huckleberries in the Huckleberry Fields. We ate several cups a day. It sounded
like every one else did too. There were still millions left. I know why the
bears didn't bother the hikers in Washington.
We found several
groups camped in the area around Killen Creek. Here it cascades down the hill
into the meadow.
Marcia starts across
the glaciers. This was a bit scary. The night before it had gotten a skiff of
snow on the ice of the glacier.
Marcia follows the
trail down the edge at Goat Rocks. If you look closely you can see the trail
follows the narrow crest clear across these peaks.
More of the crest at Goat
Rocks.
That snow in the background below the clouds is Mount Rainier. Every time
we came to the crest our guidebook said Mt Rainier dominated the area. Well,
Mt Rainier met its match with the Washington fog and rain. This may be the
best picture we got of Rainier. Ken began calling it "Mount
Rainy-er".
After we got off the
glacier and crest of Goat Rocks we saw a rainbow. That cheered us up after a
gloomy, tough afternoon.
The next morning the
trail into White Pass was better. The rain held off until we got there too.
