Central California was experiencing a record breaking heat spell the week we were in the high sierra passes. It made for comfortable hiking in the high passes, but the snow melt runoff became a big problem. Wish we had more pictures of the terrifying stream crossings.

At the top of Glen Pass, Ken contemplates the route below. The trail was completely covered with snow unlike the mountains in the background.

It was nice that we were familiar with the trail from previous hikes. We could pick points we had to hit and just go for them.

Now our water problem was too much water. This is what the trail looked like when it wasn't completely covered with snow. Route finding was one of our challenges in the sierra.

The late evening view at Palisade Lake.

This was a cold night for us. We didn't get as low as we wanted before it got dark. We camped at the tarn not far beyond this lake.

Marcia found a sign saying "Trail". It was pretty obvious here.

Ken fell into the creek in the background. No harm done, but the water was really cold!

The sunset from Muir Pass.

We arrived at the pass in the early evening. When we saw nothing but snow ahead of us, we quickly decided to stay in Muir Hut

We melted snow for our dinner and enjoyed this beautiful sunset. The hut was amazingly warm to sleep in that night.

A view of Evolution Creek in Evolution Meadow. The trail is under water.

We have to cross this creek about half a mile ahead.

Ken on his eighth and final crossing of Evolution Creek.

We tried to cross further downstream, but the creek was to deep with strong currents. Back upstream the water was slower, but just as deep. It was over 5 feet deep just in front of Ken in the picture.

Ken made four crossings attempting to find a place to cross with packs; then two more crossings for each pack. In the midst he helped Marcia cross. As he finished the eighth crossing we realized we wanted a picture. The camera was in the top of his backpack. So after unloading the camera Ken went back in the creek again for this picture.
