The view down the Hat Creek Rim. (Think of it as half a canyon.)

The trail follows the edge of the rim through volcanic rock. It was 32 miles without water with no shade. Reminded us of the San Diego desert.

After considering the water problems, we decided to hike it in one long day.

Others decided on the same plan. Then we discussed how much water to carry.

We thought 6 liters would be enough. Others were taking more, so we added another 2.5 liters.

At the end of the day we were still carrying the 2.5 liters. Here is our array of bottles.

Bundles of fiber optic cables being laid along the railroad right-of-way near Burney.

Wow, that's a lot of bandwidth.

It's picnic time again! Can you believe all that food?

Bert, Marta, Ken, Linda and Jerry at Burney Falls State Park. We took a "zero day" to meet them. It was a great boost morally and physically.

This was taken in Castella, but it belongs here.
