The locals in Big Bear
City told us it snowed every Mothers Day. The snow was one day late this year -
we arrived the day after Mothers Day and it snowed that night.
We are camped on the lawn at the local fire station. They let PCT hikers use
their showers and camp on their lawn. Another example of the gracious trail
angels we found all along the trail.

Happy Mothers Day, Marcia!
The trail provided a Mother's Day balloon on the day after Mothers Day.
The hills north of Big
Bear burned the year before we hiked it. The wild flowers and the birds were
back in abundance in the burned areas.
Thankfully the trail was cleared and in good shape. There was confusion about
whether the trail was actually open or not. We hiked the trail, then saw signs
at the other end saying it was closed.
That is Interstate 15 and
another railroad crossing at Cabazon. Guess what - we cross under them again!
Then climb back over the 2 ridges in the
middleground.
But first we get to stop
at McDonalds. Looks like some other PCT hikers must have beat us there.
The pack line got longer before we left. Maybe nobody wanted to start that 20
mile climb in the 100+ degree heat.
That is Purple Haze
providing taxi service to hikers. She had just delivered two hikers to the
trailhead at Highway 2. Now we are putting five hikers with backpacks into her
car for the trip into Wrightwood.
