We just left Gila Health Clinic where Ken's four x-rays show three broken ribs after a fall ...in the motel bathtub.

Our ER Dr was Dr A K Sherpa, originally from the Himalayas where he worked as a Sherpa. He was enthusiastic about our hiking. After asking about pack weight he was emphatic that Ken could not expect to backpack for several weeks.

After considering our options we decided our adventure on the GET is finished for now. Dr Sherpa advised 3-4 weeks of rest. We had several very nice offers of help for which we are truly thankful.

Getting from Morenci to either Tucson or Phoenix looked like a whole new adventure. We asked the motel clerk what our choices were in getting to either Tucson or Phoenix. The answer was "You can't get out of Morenci." Now I really believe Morenci is a company town! There was no bus service, no rental cars, no taxi, no shuttle, and nobody had a map of AZ to show us where the road went.

We were offered a ride by another motel guest. He had some business to attend to first, but found us at the library and delivered us to the Phoenix airport exactly 200 miles away. Wow! How lucky we were to find such a kind and generous person.

After buying expensive tickets we boarded the plane and were headed home. Our flight was about an hour late leaving Phoenix so we would be getting home really late. Luke picked us up and delivered us home. It was still April 15th!

...GottaRecover
April 21, 2009

After 6 days of "rest" I am starting to feel better. I can actually walk and do many normal activities without pain. Then I make that one bad move and realize that I still have more recovery time ahead. Looking back at my discussion with Dr Sherpa about continuing our hike I realize just how focused we were. I cannot imagine trying to carry a backpack, sleep on the ground, or walk on uneven ground with my broken ribs.
