Early in our stay we hiked the Cinque Terra. These five villages
had no connection to the rest of the world except their ports and the
trail we hiked. Yet they produced grapes, olives, and other foods, as well as the
fish from their fishing fleets.

We found these Roman theater ruins at
Volterra.
And these Etruscan ruins from smelting operations near Elba that
were abandoned before the birth of Christ. We found lots of discarded iron slag
in the park and on the nearby beach.
