Town stop; get food, drink coke, figure out water and mail film and maps. Send Pocketmail. Having a good time powered by brownies from a friend. 11:00 time for the PO and Gotta Walk

Before we left Hachita 3 CDT hikers came into town. Ishmael has printed our itinerary off the web so he knew our names. We had emailed Annie and the Salesman and were looking forward to meeting them. We stayed for lunch then did more road walk out of town while they waited for the day to cool. We hiked in a stiff headwind to the divide. First crossing of the Continental Divide and it was only 4710 feet. Then we got to something new - cross-country through skin ripping but sparse plants. We're camped it the middle of nothing and face more bushwhack tomorrow. Not a bad 20 miles.

28 miles from Hachita in 25 hours and 10 liters of water. Hot wind makes us do a little jig to the right. Route finding worked but was without reference points. We'll get water here then 10 miles up the trail at a corral spigot that the owner offered to us in Hachita. Macaroni and cheese is yummy. We have too much food for this heat.

We finished the day out of Separ with a long road walk on dirt roads in the wind. The start out of Separ was an underpass for I-10. then we had to wait for a long freight train.

From about 6 miles out of Separ until we camped, we were hemmed in between barbed wire fences. Thought we might have to climb one to camp. No good camp sites anyway.

We smelled smoke late in the afternoon but never heard anything about fires.

Made for a great sunset - really red with clouds and a mountain peak in the distance. Next morning was a great sunrise. But who thinks about a camera at 5:30 am.

Camped in Gila National Forest campground with no amenities except CDT markers.
Today was a beautiful. But it was a hard, dusty, gravel road hike because of the stinging wind that takes my breath away. It kept the temp down.
We were on the divide for miles and NM looks exactly like my expectations...kind of like a picture out of Arizona Highways.

The few people that passed us were very friendly, especially a woman who stopped while we were eating lunch. She gave us a rundown on who was ahead or behind us and by how much.  All the cars passed us going the same direction, and nobody ever came back. The last through were the Feds. The highway worker wanted to bring us something from Silver City to help us on our way. Mrs. Cullom (from the Hachita Food Mart) lives on Separ Road and told us how to find good water behind her clean, new corral. Her 4 horses were loose and befriended us. We didn't see wild animal but saw snake tracks winding across the road.

Ken's out getting bearings. His GPS has gotten 11 out of a possible 12 satellites! Help, no spell checker. The guide book has waypoints, but there is a problem. We should have checked the NAD's before we ripped the book apart to mail sections.

We want an early start for a big climb before the wind kicks up. Maybe we'll make Silver City tomorrow, Thursday.
