ATTN: Hold for Hiker ETA 5/17

Thursday, May 15, 2003
Destination: Creekside Campsite
Starting Location: Snowbird Mountain Campsite
Today's Miles: 22
Trip Miles: 264.7

This was the most beautiful enchanted hiking day so far. We heard a little rain during the night and woke in the morning to the freshest, sweetest smelling air possible. We camped with two solo hikers, Don and Mark and enjoyed talking to them as we saw them on the trail.

Early in the morning we saw bunches of Lady Slippers. Someone told us they were rare, but we are seeing quite a few. We saw several other new flowers we have yet to identify. And several hillsides were absolutely filled with flowers. We called one Trillium Hillium.

The day got even better when we strolled to the top of Max Patch and gazed in all directions at superlative views of hills and forests. Oak is just beginning to leaf out so they look fuzzy and pink. Other trees were different shades of green and or flowering.

We opted to keep hiking past a shelter and up Bluff Mtn. The climb was easy. The bluff was the weather. We had our ponchos on and off 3 or 4 times. The rain clouds at the top of Bluff Mtn were mist threading through the trees over masses of yellow flowers and great rocks. We both shot lots of photos.

We made a quick camp when the rain started for real. Hot Springs, TN is right on the trail tomorrow and it has a PO with our food and a package of brownies!! Just 5 miles away!

Life doesn't get any better.

We got up late (7:30) and tried to dry out things. We got a strong rain storm early last night. Early in the morning we were able to open up the tent door to help dry out things.

FAA tower just off the trail on Snowbird Mountain

We knew we only had a few  we weren't concerned. The miles into town seemed long - took too much time even though our pace was good. Sometimes that happens.

We were the first hikers through the trail so we did cobweb sweep. We wonder if the spiders stay up all night building those webs. Not many flowers out after a good rain storm.

Tonight we could see the hills above town. Those hills are really rugged! Now we understand why the hiking is difficult.

Showers and laundry are done. In the morning we need to mail some our bounce box and extra food at the PO and buy some lunch food.
