ATTN: Hold for Hiker ETA 7/3

Saturday, July 05, 2003
Destination: PA 850
Starting Location: Boiling Springs
Today's Miles: 17
Trip Miles: 1124.9

We got a late start this morning, about 10:40, after breakfast at Ishmaels. The plan was to hike 17 miles and get picked up by PA Jeff to spend the night at his cabin. Staying with hiking friends could get to be habit forming.

The trail today was unusual because we spent most of the day crossing a broad valley. The trail crossed pastures, wound through farmers fields, and followed sections of woods along creeks and between fields. We got a short afternoon rain shower. It cooled the hot, muggy temperature down quickly. Just in time for our only climb today - 800 feet.

We hurried down the hill to find PA Jeff starting up the AT from the trailhead. We showered while Jeff cooked a diner that hikers dream about. That is as good as it gets!

Our wonderful host, Jeff, fed us a gourmet breakfast and then drove us back to where he picked us up last night. We carried our packs which seemed very light to us because we only had lunches in them. The rest of our food is still at the Duncannon PO. We will pick it up tomorrow morning.

We found the hiking today was tough. Several times we had really rocky terrain on the ridges before & after Duncannon. It drove home what we have heard about Pennsylvania rocks. The hiking was slow, but we accepted that the rocks are part of the trail. We really wanted to make good time to meet Jeff.

We stopped in Duncannon for ice cream and slushees in the heat. Then we crossed the broad and shallow Susqueshanna River and climbed back to the ridge. Jeff met us on the trail when we were close to our meeting place and the three of us hiked back to the parking lot and back to Jeff's house for steak dinner, showers and bed.

We had wild animal sightings before breakfast at Jeff's cabin. A bear pulled at a birdfeeder to spill and eat the seed and while she was eating a deer came into the yard, saw the bear and scampered. After the deer left a wild turkey walked into the yard to eat corn.

Jeff took us to Duncannon PO and shopping. It was so late after all our errands that we stopped for lunch before being dropped back at the trailhead. We had an afternoon thunderstorm that dumped so much rain that our shoes immediately filled up through the mesh tops. Then we sat on the rocks on the top of the ridge and dried our ponchos while hikers that had been behind us stopped and chatted.

We settled for a level spot to pitch our tent on after 8 pm.
